Introduction
In fall and winter of 2006 we are starting on a new type of document: Physicians' office letters from the CHOP system, focusing on child patients who have or may have the genetically linked heart condition Long QT Syndrome.
Entity Types
We intend to annotate as many as eleven entity types, but we will start with just two, Condition and Sign/Symptom. The links lead to the discussion page with further comment on the terms linked.
- A Sign / Symptom is an observation suggesting or indicating a pathological state, or a description of such an observation.
- A Condition (short for Disease / Medical Condition) is a conclusion drawn by the doctor, an underlying pathological phenotype.
Question: What about hypoglycemia? You can't identify that with a single observation, it needs a longitudinal series of measurements.
Answer: It still isn't a pathology. It's a single fact about blood sugar level in this patient, but it isn't a disease any more than fever is a disease: you don't know what caused either of them without looking further.
